A brief history
Ramanagara previously called by the name Close pet in memory of Mr. Closepet who was ruling this town during the period of British and it has been renamed as Ramanagara during the period of Kengal Hanumanthaiah, Ex. Chief Minister, Govt. of Karnataka. Recently it has been upgraded from sub-division to District head quarters. The city is situated along Bangalore -Mysore State Highway 17 at a distance of 50 Kms from Bangalore.
Bangalore has a number of cultural centers near it, which offer to the tourist a number of traditional craft items. Ramanagara is one of them. Ramanagaram is a silk cocoon-marketing center. It is a district center and acts as market and distribution center in addition to providing administrative, health care, educational, financial, recreation and entertainment facilities. Gousia Engineering college in Ramanagara is one of the well known colleges in Karnataka. Recently Govt Engineering college, Rageev Ghandhi University of health Sciences, and other educational institutes are coming to Ramanagara.
What to see
Ramadevara Betta : Rock-climbers and adventure seekers need look no further. 50 Kms south-west from Bangalore, Ramanagaram, provides the ideal location with landscaped rock faces. Another major attraction at Ramanagaram is the silk cocoon marketing center. One of the most famous Hindi movies Sholay was shot in Ramanagaram.
Janapada Loka : Sprawling across 15 acres, Janapada Loka or "Folk-culture World" is a world of simplicity and art.Janapada Loka, a subsidiary of the Karnataka Janapada Parishath, is dedicated to preserve and promote folk art and culture. The complex has an art gallery, an open-air theatre, a studio and a museum. Janapada Loka is located near Ramanagaram and is 53 Kms away from Bangalore.

How to Reach
Ramanagara is located along Bangalore- Mysore State Highway No. 17 at a distance of 50 Kms from Bangalore. The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses and buses which goes to Mysore has to go via Ramanagara. There is one railway station in Ramanagara. There are number of daily trains from Bangalore to Mysore like Cauvery Express, Tirupathi Fast Passenger etc., has a stop in Ramanagara station.
